Counterfactual Donkey Sentences: A Response to

چکیده
Robert van Rooij (2006) proposed an analysis of counterfactual donkey sentences by combining the Stalnaker–Lewis analysis of counterfactuals with standard dynamic semantics. This paper points out some problems with van Rooij’s treatment of counterfactual sentences in the language of first-order logic and provides a new interpretation using dynamic semantics. 1 VAN ROOIJ’S THEORY OF COUNTERFACTUAL

High and low readings in indicative donkeys1
In this paper, we extend existing accounts of high and low readings in counterfactual donkey sentences (van Rooij 2006, Walker and Romero 2015) to indicative donkey sentences. First, we generalize the account to indicative donkey sentences featuring modals that employ ordering sources. Then, we turn to indicative donkey sentences with adverbs of quantification. We discuss the relationship betwe...
متن کاملHow to donkey FC- and NPI-any∗
Free Choice any and Negative Polarity Item any are uniformly analyzed as counterfactual donkey sentences (in disguise). Their difference in meaning will be reduced to the distinction between strong and weak readings of donkey sentences. It is shown that this explains the universal and existential character of FCand NPI-any, respectively, and the positive and negative contexts in which they are ...

متن کاملFree Choice Counterfactual Donkeys
We propose a straightforward analysis of counterfactual donkey sentences, by combining the Lewis/Stalnaker analysis of counterfactuals with standard dynamic semantics. The main idea is to define a similarity relation between world-assignment pairs such that two such pairs are unconnected if their assignments differ. We show that with the help of this ordering relation we can also account for a ...
متن کاملBeating a Donkey: a Mental Model Approach to Complex Anaphoric Phenomena
In this paper, we want to show that mental models provide the adequate level for explaining complex anaphoric phenomena, like donkey sentences. The key idea is that anaphora can be more easily resolved by referring to an extensional representation of the meaning of sentences, like the one provided by mental models.
